Commercial

The first historic commercial buildings appeared in the early 1840s when George Yount and then Edward and Maria Bale constructed flour mills. Resorts, hotels, saloons, and stores quickly followed with the settlement of Valley towns. Locally sourced wood was soon replaced with more permanent brick and stone in commercial buildings throughout the Valley.  Commercial architecture was a particular source of pride, since a well-designed building was an advertisement for the business. Wineries and retail establishments across the valley have consistently highlighted the prevailing architectural trends of each era.
