This collection takes up one archival box containing 32 folders, one shelf containing 43 bound volumes, 7 posters, 4 scrapbooks located in one archival box, 21 loose photographs and 6 mounted photographs located.
The earliest records show Howard Ellis Roper living in Napa in 1888 at the age of 21. While living in Napa, Roper served as president of the Napa Building and Loan Association, Secretary of the School Board of Trustees, and other positions that involved the school district and the building of the Napa State Hospital. The collection consists of the papers, letters, books, and photographs that reflect his work with the school district and the State Hospital. There are a very small amount of personal items such as photographs and yearbooks.
The photographs and scrapbooks are available digitally through the Past Perfect system. Use caution when opening the bound volumes located on the shelf as there are loose papers inside them.

Biography / History
Howard Ellis Roper was born on September 24, 1866 in Massachusetts. The earliest records show him in Napa at age 21, in the year 1888. He was married to a Julie M and which shows up in records starting in 1930 and one child listed named Edwin E. Roper. Howard Roper died in Napa on September 1, 1953.
Scope & Content
This collection contains letter, notes, newspaper clippings, yearbooks, scrapbooks, published reports, monetary ledgers, work ledgers, construction notes, and photographs. The content of these materials focuses on the work that Howard E. Roper did in Napa County while working on the county school board and the Napa Building & Loan Association. The main focus of these materials is on the Napa State Hospital, Shearer Elementary School, Lincoln Elementary School, and Napa Union High School.
