Skills
Immigrants arrived in Napa with skills they learned in working in a family business or in apprenticeships. These skills helped define the economy of Napa Valley. Other immigrants provided the labor needed for farming and industry thereby attaining skill sets on the job. In 1852, the 1083 residents in the Valley represented over 40 various, employable skill sets. By 1872, along with the rapid growth of the immigrant population and changing technologies, Napa’s City Directory listed over 150 different, employable, skill sets. The rapid population growth drove the diversification of needed skills to help Napa Valley Prosper.
